RE: Restoration of Kiest Park Memorial Gardens Pergola.
Dear Councilman Neumann,
In the interest of restoring our beautiful parks of Oak Cliff, the treasured gems for living in this area, I wish to voice my opinion for the rebuilding of the Pergola at Kiest Park Memorial Gardens.
I grew up near Kiest Park and have spent all of my life in and around these last oases of nature that we have left in Oak Cliff.
I have watched with such sadness of how my area has been neglected, abused and now blighted with urban “scrawl”. These parks were my first impression of the beauty of large natural landscapes, trees, wildflowers and (back in the 70’s and 80’s) wonderfully maintained azaleas, cannas and rose gardens.
The architectural interests of the WPA projects have always inspired me and are a necessary foundation to these parks. We must remember that this park was donated and the gardens are a Memorial to the generosity of Edwin Kiest, a founding father, to honor his wife, Elizabeth Patterson Kiest and should be maintained as such.
Lake Cliff’s pergola has been recently restored and presents a beautiful gateway to North Oak Cliff from Downtown Dallas.
I believe that the citizens of our area deserve to share in the same enjoyment and beautification of our Kiest Park and its history.
To that end, I would much rather see funding earmarked for the restoration of the pergola, than towards more work on the hiking and biking trails.
Trails are great, but without the park like surroundings, they become just urban sidewalks (that is not without issues of trash, graffiti and overuse).
I plead for your consideration of this project, not just for us, but so that future generations can enjoy the outdoors and to learn that there is more to Kiest Park than just competitive sports and urban socialism.
Respectfully yours,
Ms. Roxie A. Manning
